About Marine Floats

Marine Floats' Facility on the Wheeler Osgood Waterway

Wendell and Pauline Stroud assumed ownership of Marine Floats in 1988 after acquiring the name and equipment from the original owners. The company was originally founded in Tenino, Washington in 1976 and produced floating docks for residential customers.

Although they operated the firm initially with a small staff, Wendell Stroud’s marine engineering expertise brought significant changes to the quality and design of the company’s floats and structures. As a result, the company’s sales and reputation have grown steadily over the last two decades.

Marine Floats subsequently moved to its present location on the Wheeler Osgood Waterway in Tacoma where the company is able to assemble turnkey marinas and other projects in the water. The location allows most projects to be delivered by water, saving substantial onsite construction time.

In the 1990s, the firm began development of commercial marinas starting with the Quartermaster Marina on Vashon Island. It has since completed numerous important projects for area marinas including the Tacoma Yacht Club, Delin Docks Marina, Foss Harbor Marina, Foss Landing Marina, Hood Canal Marina, Johnny’s Dock Marina and the Harborview Marina.

Listing of salmon under the Endangered Species Act brought all permitting of docks and piers in the Puget Sound area to a standstill from 1999 to 2002. Since then, Marine Floats has turned its expertise in navigating the increasing complexity of the permitting process into a strategic advantage for its clients.

Today the firm employs approximately 30. The Strouds emphasize integrity, excellence and civic engagement as core values of the firm.
